Messalina's appearance on provincial bronze from Cnossos places this coin within the earliest years of Claudius's reign, before her execution in 41 AD — carried out on Claudius's orders after her audacious bigamous marriage to Gaius Silius while the emperor was absent at Ostia. The magistrate names Cythero and Capito preserved in the legend help anchor the issue administratively, though the Cretan civic coinage of this period is notoriously difficult to sequence precisely within the reign.
