Struck in the immediate aftermath of Drusilla's elevation following Caligula's accession in 37 AD, this issue from Smyrna is one of several eastern civic coinages that moved quickly to honor the emperor's sister — a woman Caligula appears to have held in extraordinary regard, and whom he would later deify upon her death in June 38 AD. The magistrate Menophanes, named on this piece, is otherwise unattested, making RPC I 2474 one of the few surviving records of his tenure.
