This issue belongs to the Augustan provincial coinage of Alexandria, produced under Roman administration following Octavian's annexation of Egypt in 30 BC after the deaths of Antony and Cleopatra. Egypt was governed not as a senatorial province but as an imperial domain — no senator was permitted to enter without Augustus's personal authorization — and its coinage was correspondingly kept separate from the Roman monetary system, circulating only within Egyptian borders by deliberate policy.
