Amastris was a coastal city on the Black Sea founded by the niece of Darius III, later absorbed into Bithynia under Roman provincial administration. Under Antoninus Pius the city enjoyed a period of relative prosperity, issuing a range of civic bronzes — this being among the smaller denominations — that circulated locally alongside official Roman coinage without ever reaching wider distribution. The city's isolated position on the Pontic coast meant these issues stayed close to home.
