Additional information

Tralles, a prosperous city in the Maeander valley, held the right to strike civic bronze under Roman oversight through the conventus system — regional assize circuits where the governor dispensed justice and local elites competed fiercely for administrative titles. The magistrate name partially preserved in this coin's legend, rendered as ΕΠΙ ΠΟΠΛΙΟΥ ΓΡΑ(ΜΑΤΕΩΣ), identifies the issuing grammateus, a civic secretary whose tenure in office was often the single occasion a wealthy Trallian family would commemorate itself in metal. The early Antonine date narrows this to a period when Tralles was rebuilding civic prestige following earthquake damage that had periodically destabilized the region since the catastrophic event of 26 AD.
