The god leans upon his serpent-entwined staff (the kerykeion of Asclepius), held in his left hand, a motif closely associated with the renowned sanctuary of Asclepius at Pergamum. The ethnic legend ΠΕΡΓΑΜΗΝΩΝ is inscribed around the right periphery of the field, affirming the civic identity of the issuing mint. The reverse composition reflects Pergamum's status as a leading centre of the cult of Asclepius in the Roman imperial period. |
