Ephesus retained extraordinary autonomy in its local bronze coinage throughout the third century, issuing civic types under its own authority even as the imperial government lurched through the Crisis of the Third Century. The joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus — father and son ruling simultaneously from 253 until Valerian's catastrophic capture by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260 — brackets this issue, though pinning production to either side of that watershed is rarely possible for provincial bronzes of this type.

The Ephesian civic series under this reign is catalogued sparsely, and X#61090 remains lightly documented in the major corpora.
