Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valerian facing right, depicted three-quarter from the rear, with the paludamentum visible over the left shoulder. The effigy is rendered in the provincial style characteristic of the Ephesian mint during the joint reign. The circumferential Greek legend runs clockwise around the bust within a beaded border.

The stag is depicted with head lowered beneath the goddess's grip, evoking the huntress aspect of Artemis. The scene is enclosed by a beaded border, with the civic legend distributed around the periphery and additional letters visible in the lower exergual area, referencing Ephesus's prestigious triple neocorate status.
