Alexandria Troas was a Roman colony founded by Antigonus around 310 BC and refounded by Lysimachus, before Augustus elevated it to full colonial status — a rank the city advertised aggressively on its bronze coinage for centuries. The joint reign of Valerian and Gallienus, father and son ruling simultaneously from 253 AD, produced a remarkable volume of provincial issues as the empire fractured under the pressure of simultaneous frontier wars and the catastrophic plague of Cyprian.
Valerian's capture by Shapur I of Persia in 260 AD — the first Roman emperor taken prisoner in battle — effectively ended the joint reign. Issues bearing both names date to the narrow window before that humiliation.
