Struck under the duoviri of Roman Corinth during the reign of Tiberius, this colonial bronze belongs to the civic coinage of a city that was itself a Roman refoundation — Julius Caesar re-established Corinth as Colonia Laus Iulia Corinthiensis in 44 BC, nearly a century after Lucius Mummius had razed the Greek city to rubble in 146 BC. The magistrate L. Furius Laleo named in the legend is otherwise poorly documented, which is itself characteristic of the Corinthian duoviral series — local office-holders whose careers left almost no trace outside the coins they authorized.
