Nicomedia held the title of "twice neokoros" — twice temple warden of the imperial cult — a status aggressively lobbied for and periodically contested among rival Bithynian cities. The ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚ legend on this issue is not decorative; it was a civic assertion of precedence over Nicaea, with whom Nicomedia fought a prolonged and occasionally bitter rivalry over provincial supremacy throughout the Severan period.
