Philip I came to power by negotiating directly with Shapur I after the death of Gordian III on the Persian frontier in 244 — almost certainly having engineered that death himself. Ancyra, the principal city of Galatia, struck provincially under the Sardis conventus throughout his reign, producing a modest output that reflects the city's mid-tier administrative standing rather than any special imperial favor.
