Zacynthus, the southernmost of the Ionian Islands, struck its own civic bronze coinage under Roman provincial authority — a privilege maintained by many Greek island communities well into the second century. The reign of Marcus Aurelius saw a modest revival of such issues across Achaea, partly as a practical response to chronic shortages of small-denomination Roman bronze in the eastern provinces.
The magistrate responsible for authorizing this particular civic emission is unrecorded.
