Serdica — modern Sofia — was a Thracian settlement absorbed into the Roman province of Moesia and later Thrace, striking autonomous bronze issues under imperial reign names as a mark of civic loyalty rather than financial necessity. The city would later become one of Constantine's preferred residences, but under Marcus Aurelius it was a modest provincial center whose coin output was limited and irregular, which explains the rarity of types like this one.
