Aegium was one of the original twelve cities of the Achaean League and hosted its federal assemblies for centuries — a civic distinction the city clearly still traded on under Roman rule when issuing local bronze of this type. Provincial bronzes under Marcus Aurelius proliferated across Achaea as the emperor's Antonine coinage circulated in parallel, leaving municipal issues like this one to serve purely local exchange.
