Macrinus ruled for just fourteen months before being defeated at the Battle of Antioch in June 218 and executed shortly after — making any provincial bronze struck in his name a product of an extremely compressed window. Apollonia ad Rhyndacum, a minor Bithynian city on the Rhyndacus river, issued coins almost exclusively during the reigns of emperors whose tenures are now measured in months rather than years, which may reflect the city's limited but opportunistic engagement with the imperial mint cycle.

The conventus of Cyzicus administered civic coinage for this region, and Apollonia's output under Macrinus is sparse enough that die-sharing with neighboring cities has been proposed but not conclusively documented.
