Herod of Chalcis ruled a small client kingdom in the Beqaa Valley under Claudian patronage, his authority confirmed by Rome following the death of Agrippa I in 44 AD. His coinage output was limited — Chalcis was a minor political prize, granted partly to keep a Herodian loyalist close to Rome's interests in the region. The "half-denomination" designation reflects a fractional relationship to a larger bronze unit, though the larger denomination itself is scarce enough that the pairing remains debated among specialists.
