Æ20 - Gordian III P M S COL VIM, AN I

Viminacium, the legionary fortress-city on the Danube frontier, was granted colonial status under Gordian III — almost certainly as a political reward tied to the military campaigns stabilizing the region against Gothic and Carpian incursions. The city promptly launched its own bronze coinage, and AN I on this piece marks it as struck in the very first year of that colonial era, making it among the earliest issues of what would become a long and well-documented civic series running through the reign of Gallienus.
