Aphrodisias held an unusual status among Carian cities: it claimed the goddess Aphrodite as its divine founder and leveraged that connection into real political capital, eventually securing freedom from taxation under Augustus. The city continued striking bronze civic coinage well into the third century, and issues under Gordian III fall within a period when the eastern mints were particularly active — the young emperor's five-year reign saw enormous provincial output, partly to fund campaigns against Shapur I on the Persian frontier.
The reference to Conventus of Alabanda places this coin within the Roman judicial circuit administrative grouping, not a political subordination to Alabanda itself.
