Reverse description Frontal cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus (Ephesia), the multi-breasted idol depicted in the rigid, hieratic manner characteristic of her famous cult image, flanked on either side by a stag. The composition closely follows the well-known Ephesian type disseminated throughout the eastern provinces. A circular Greek legend runs around the periphery, recording the name of the local archon and civic ethnic.

Additional information

Ancyra in Galatia — modern Ankara — served as the administrative hub of the province under the Flavians, and civic bronze issues like this one were struck under the authority of local magistrates rather than the imperial mint. The magistrate name encoded in the obverse legend, Asklepiades, is otherwise unattested in the numismatic record for this city, making the die sequence associated with this officeholder unusually difficult to place chronologically within Domitian's fifteen-year reign.
