Additional information

This coin was issued for Domitia Augusta, wife of Domitian, during a period when her official status at court was precarious. She had been publicly divorced by Domitian around 83 AD — ancient sources differ on the precise date and circumstances — before being restored to imperial favor shortly after. Alexandrian civic bronzes struck in her name during this period are among the few material attestations of her resumed position, the Egyptian mint having moved quickly to align its output with whatever the palace signaled.
