Corinth's colonial coinage under Domitian sits in an awkward historical position: the city had been refounded by Julius Caesar in 44 BC as a Roman colony precisely because the original Greek city had been razed by Mummius in 146 BC, leaving a century-long gap in habitation. By Domitian's reign the colony was thoroughly Latin in its civic identity, which the colonial title in the inscription makes explicit. Provincial bronze of this type circulated alongside Roman imperial coinage in the Peloponnese, filling denominations Rome's central mints did not bother to supply to the eastern provinces.
