Each nymph holds a rudder as her attribute, symbolising maritime governance and the city's commercial prominence as a naval crossroads. The composition is a distinctive Corinthian colonial type alluding to the city's unique geographical position on the isthmus. The colonial legend encircles the design in the field. |
