Reverse description A stag, sacred animal of Artemis Ephesia, stands in profile facing right, rendered in a sturdy, naturalistic style consistent with Ephesian civic bronze coinage. The animal is depicted in full figure, standing on a plain ground line. The ethnic legend ΕΦΕΣΙΩΝ appears in two lines in the upper field to the left of the stag, identifying the issuing city. The reverse design reflects the strong cultic association between Ephesus and the goddess Artemis, whose temple was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
