| Beschrijving keerzijde | Dionysus, the god of wine, depicted standing to the left in a relaxed contrapposto pose. In his right hand he extends a cantharus (wine cup) downward toward a panther crouching at his feet, while his left hand holds a long thyrsus (the fennel staff wreathed with ivy, emblematic of the deity). The encircling legend ΑΚΜΟΝΕΩΝ in Greek identifies the civic authority of Acmonea. The composition reflects the strong Dionysiac iconographic tradition favored by Phrygian cities in their provincial bronze coinage. |
