Pergamum retained its status as the leading city of the Asian conventus under Augustus, a position it had held since the province was organized in 133 BC following the bequest of Attalus III. The grammateus — the civic secretary whose name appears on this issue — was one of the most consequential local magistracies in the Greek east, responsible for official correspondence and the validation of public documents. That the office holder is named on the coinage reflects the competitive honorific culture of elite Pergamene families, for whom a mint magistracy was a mark of civic standing worth preserving in bronze.
