Reverse description Bare head of Poseidon facing right, the god depicted with his characteristic mature, bearded visage in the Hellenistic tradition. Flanking the portrait are the divine attributes of the sea god: a dolphin to one side and a trident to the other, serving as identifying symbols of Poseidon's dominion over the sea — a fitting civic type for the coastal city of Carystus on the island of Euboea. The field is worn and heavily patinated with an olive-green encrustation consistent with prolonged burial.
