| Reverse description | Bare head of Poseidon facing right, the god depicted with his characteristic mature, bearded visage in the Hellenistic tradition. Flanking the portrait are the divine attributes of the sea god: a dolphin to one side and a trident to the other, serving as identifying symbols of Poseidon's dominion over the sea — a fitting civic type for the coastal city of Carystus on the island of Euboea. The field is worn and heavily patinated with an olive-green encrustation consistent with prolonged burial. |
