Aegium was one of the most historically significant cities of the Achaean League — it served as the league's regular meeting place before Roman dissolution of the confederation in 146 BC. By the time Antoninus Pius issued provincial bronzes bearing the city's ethnic, Aegium had been folded into the Roman province of Achaea for nearly three centuries, its civic coinage functioning largely as a local token economy alongside imperial silver.
The BCD collection reference IV.1#4612 places this among a thinly documented series; relatively few dies are known for Aegium under Antoninus Pius.
