Obverse description Draped and diademed bust of Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander, facing right, rendered in the provincial style characteristic of Ephesian civic coinage. The effigy is encircled by the Greek legend ΙΟΥΛΙΑ ΜΑΜΑΙΑ ϹΕ, identifying the empress as Julia Mamaea Augusta. The portrait displays the empress with an elaborate coiffure, typical of Severan-era imperial portraiture as adapted by eastern provincial mints.
