Additional information

Cydonia, the ancient Cretan city on the island's northwestern coast, maintained civic coinage under Roman imperial oversight — a privilege not automatically extended to every provincial center. That this issue bears Nero's association places it within a reign defined by the systematic erasure of predecessors: Claudius's portraits were methodically removed from public monuments following his death in 54 AD. A small Cretan bronze from a single city survives where imperial policy left little room for local ambiguity about whom to honor.
