Augusta Traiana — modern Stara Zagora in Bulgaria — was a Thracian city refounded under Trajan and given its name in his honor, though it gained municipal coinage rights under later emperors. Issues for Marcus Aurelius from this mint date to the period before his co-emperor Lucius Verus died in 169, which brackets the type tightly. The city's bronze output during this reign is sparsely documented, and IV.1#10347 represents one of the scarcer die pairings in the Thracian provincial series.
