Ilium — Roman-era Troy — exploited its mythological identity aggressively throughout the imperial period, maintaining a privileged relationship with Rome through the shared fiction of Trojan descent. When Marcus Aurelius acceded in 161, the city moved quickly to issue coins in his name, likely as part of a civic loyalty demonstration during the co-reign transition that also brought Lucius Verus to power. The Conventus of Adramyteum, the judicial district under which Ilium operated, grouped it administratively with far wealthier coastal cities, making its coin output modest but symbolically outsized.
