Year 14 of Hadrian's reign coincided with his extended tour of Egypt — he arrived in Alexandria in late 130 AD, an imperial visit that prompted a surge of celebratory local coinage from the Alexandrian mint. The dating system used here, expressed in regnal years rather than Roman consular dating, reflects the distinct administrative identity Egypt held within the empire: it was treated as imperial personal property, governed separately from the senatorial provinces, its mint answerable to a prefect rather than the Senate.
