Additional information

Delphi's civic bronze coinage under Hadrian reflects the emperor's well-documented personal attachment to Greece — he visited the sanctuary at least twice and held the position of archon at Athens. The oracle had been in sharp decline since the first century, but Hadrian's philhellenic program brought renewed patronage to the site, and local civic issues like this one were part of a broader reassertion of Delphic prestige during his reign.
