Additional information

Nicopolis ad Actium was founded by Augustus on the site of his camp before the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, and the city's famous Actian Games — the ΑΚΤΙΑ referenced in this coin's legend — were elevated by Augustus to Panhellenic status, ranking them alongside the great crown games. Under Elagabalus the city continued issuing bronze for local circulation, invoking that Augustan foundation myth even as the emperor himself was busy dismantling Roman religious convention from Rome.
