Corinth's colonial coinage under Domitian reflects the city's unusual status as a Roman refoundation — Julius Caesar had reestablished it as Colonia Laus Iulia Corinthiensis in 44 BC, nearly a century after Lucius Mummius had razed the Greek city to rubble in 146 BC. The COL IVL AVG abbreviation in the legend acknowledges both that Caesarian origin and the subsequent Augustan reorganization of the colony's civic charter.
Provincial bronzes of this module from Corinth circulated locally within the Peloponnese, rarely traveling far from the Isthmus.
