Obverse description Laureate bust of Commodus facing right, draped in paludamentum and cuirass, portrayed with his characteristic long, full beard; the effigy is rendered in a three-quarter frontal perspective typical of later Antonine provincial portraiture. The obverse legend encircles the bust in Latin characters, partially reading IMP CAI M AV COMMODVS, with a noted die-cutter error (CAI for CAE). The portrait displays the robust, idealised features associated with Commodus's later coinage from the eastern provincial mints.

Additional information

Parion, the Mysian colony refounded as a Roman colony under Caesar or Augustus, retained the right to strike bronze coinage well into the Severan period. Issues under Commodus from this mint are sparse; the city's output during his reign was modest compared to neighboring Bithynian centers, and surviving specimens tend to show heavy die wear consistent with prolonged local use rather than careful storage.
