| Obverse description | Turreted and draped bust of the Amazon Smyrna, city goddess and eponymous founder of Smyrna, facing right. The effigy is rendered in typical provincial Greek style, with a mural crown or turreted headdress atop flowing hair, and the drapery falls over the right shoulder. The encircling Greek legend ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ runs around the periphery of the flan, identifying the issuing city. The die work reflects the competent engraving tradition of the Ionian mint at Smyrna during the Antonine period. |
