Cius was a Bithynian coastal city with a long history of autonomous civic coinage, but its output under the Antonines was modest and geographically constrained in circulation — most specimens surface in northwestern Anatolia. The date range 180–182 places this issue in the opening years of Commodus's sole reign, immediately following the death of Marcus Aurelius, when provincial mints across Bithynia briefly intensified output as civic authorities formally acknowledged the new emperor.
