Reverse description A lion passant to the right, depicted in a naturalistic style with well-modelled musculature, occupying the central field of the flan. A horizontal ground line divides the field from the exergue, below which the civic ethnic legend ϹΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ is inscribed in Greek characters. The lion, a traditional symbol of Smyrna and of the Lydian-Ionian cultural heritage, is rendered in the provincial workshop style characteristic of late 2nd-century Ionian civic bronzes.
