Reverse description A hippopotamus striding to the right, depicted in a naturalistic though somewhat schematic manner consistent with Alexandrian provincial die-cutting of the period. The animal is shown in full profile, its massive body rendered in low relief against a plain field. Beneath the hippopotamus, a ground line is visible, and the regnal year legend appears in the lower field or exergue. The hippopotamus, sacred to the Egyptian god Set and a symbol associated with the Nile, reflects the Egyptianizing iconographic tradition of Alexandrian coinage under the Julio-Claudian emperors.
