Beschrijving keerzijde Cybele enthroned, seated to left, wearing a kalathos (turreted crown) and draped in a long garment. Her right hand is extended forward holding a patera, while her left arm rests upon a tympanum at her side. A lion crouches at her feet to the left, an attribute closely associated with the cult of Cybele. The ethnic legend CΑΛΗΝΩΝ is inscribed in the field, denoting the civic authority of Sala in Mauretania Tingitana.

Aanvullende informatie

Sala was a Roman colony in Mauretania Tingitana, situated near the mouth of the Bou Regreg river — modern Rabat — and one of the southernmost cities in the Roman world to produce a civic bronze coinage. Issues attributed to the Trajanic period reflect the city's administrative consolidation under Rome's reorganization of the Tingitana province, a process accelerated after Trajan's accession in 98 AD. The colony's coinage output was modest and geographically isolated, which accounts for the relative difficulty in assembling a complete type set from this mint.
