| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central device consisting of a triskeles with a gorgoneion (gorgon head) at its hub, a distinctively Sicilian symbol of great antiquity used on civic coinage throughout the island. The three legs radiate outward from the central gorgon head in the characteristic arrangement associated with the triskelion of Sicily. The surrounding circular Latin legend reads SEPT ET BALB IIVIR, naming the two duovirs Septimius and Balbus as local magistrates. The flan is irregular and the strike somewhat off-center, consistent with the municipal bronze coinage of an uncertain Sicilian city during the reign of Augustus. |
