Additional information

Hierocaesarea, a small Lydian city whose claim to prominence rested almost entirely on its ancient sanctuary of Persian Artemis, struck bronze coinage during Antoninus Pius's reign under the magistrate name ΓΛΑΥΚΟϹ — Glaukos. The city fell within the conventus of Pergamum, meaning legal and administrative appeals flowed through Pergamum rather than directly to Rome. Civic bronzes of this type functioned as purely local exchange; they rarely traveled far from the Hermus valley region where they were produced.
