Pitane was one of the smaller coastal cities of Aeolis, situated near the mouth of the Caicus River, and retained enough civic pride under Roman rule to strike local bronze on the authority of a named magistrate — here, a strategos whose name survives only partially on the die. The truncated ethnic ΠΙΤΑ rather than the full ΠΙΤΑΝЄΩΝ appears on issues of this type, a compression that suggests either a small die or a local engraving convention specific to this mint.
