| Obverse description | Turreted and draped bust of Roma facing right, wearing a mural crown, depicted in the Hellenistic tradition favoured by Phrygian civic bronzes. The effigy is rendered in low relief with visible drapery folds at the shoulder. The surrounding Greek legend identifies the dedicating city. The flan is irregular and the strike moderately well-centred. |

Cotiaeum, a Phrygian city of modest regional standing, issued bronze coinage under local magistrates whose names appear in the genitive on the coin itself — the ΕΠΙ Κ ΑΡΕΤΙΔΟΣ formula identifying the presiding civic official rather than any imperial appointee. This practice of attributing local issues to named magistrates was common across the Conventus of Synnada, but the specific magistrate Aretides is poorly attested outside numismatic evidence, making coins like this one the primary documentation of his tenure.
