Aegae was a minor Aeolian city whose civic coinage under the Flavians leaned heavily on its claim to Nemean Games victories — the magistrate name here, rendered with the epithet ΝΕΜΕΟΝΕΙΚΟΥ, identifies Apollonios as a Nemean victor, a local honor substantial enough to anchor his term of office in the permanent record of bronze coinage. Small Conventus of Smyrna cities used exactly this kind of civic pride to negotiate continued minting rights under Roman administration.
