Ancyra in Phrygia — not to be confused with the Galatian capital — struck bronze issues under Septimius Severus during a period when provincial mints across Asia Minor were scrambling to demonstrate loyalty following the civil wars of 193 AD. Severus's rapid defeat of Pescennius Niger, whose support base was heavily concentrated in the eastern provinces, made visible allegiance from Phrygian cities both politically urgent and practically wise.
The Conventus of Sardis administered a sprawling district; smaller civic mints within it often produced in limited volume, which accounts for the relative obscurity of Ancyra's Severan bronzes in the reference literature.
