A serpent rises in the right field, a symbol associated with the city's cult and fortune. The encircling Latin colonial legend COL MET ANTONINIANA identifies Edessa by its honorific colonial title Colonia Metropolis Antoniniana, conferred during the reign of Caracalla. The flan is struck on an irregular planchet typical of hammered bronze provincial coinage. |
